REX Civil Engineering were engaged by Volker Fitzpatrick to provide an Engineering team to deliver the Engineering elements associated with laying Pavement Quality Concrete using 3D Model control.  REX supplied a team of four Engineers on rotation to allow for 7 day working while in full possession of both aircraft runways.

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Calibration of survey equipment and control systems

  • Validate and check control systems

  • Receive and process design information for setting out

  • Setting line and level of shuttering for hand lay sections for concrete pavement

  • Calibrate and set up machine control systems

  • Progressive manual line and level checks throughout the paving operations

  • Provide Engineering support to concrete surfacing team

  • Complete as-built surveys and compile data for submission to design team

  • Proactive review of design information to ensure the issued data covers the full extents of the programmed works

  • Liaise with design team regarding issues with design model and assist in resolving issues

Project Description

Highways England are converting the existing section of the M1 from Junction 13 at Milton Keynes South to Junction 16 at the Upper Heyford Interchange (A45 to Daventry, A4500 to Northampton) into a smart motorway. 

The project involves: 

  • converting the motorway between junctions 13 to 16 into four lanes of traffic with no hard shoulder 

  • installing 38 new (and two upgraded) emergency areas with emergency roadside telephones 

  • new overhead gantries and electronic signs to show the variable speed limits and provide driver information  

  • new and replacement safety barriers in the central reservation and verge areas 

  • CCTV cameras 

  • new noise barriers and partial replacement of the existing noise barrier 

  • planting trees and bushes to replace any removed during construction

REX Civil Engineering were engaged by Mick George to provide an Site team to deliver the Engineering elements associated with their Earthworks packages and assist in the handover process.  REX have supplied a team consisting of an Site Agent, sub-agent, 2 Site Civil Engineers and an Earthworks Machine Control & Modelling Engineer
